China Mobile Tops Index: A New Era in Digital Transformation

Omdia's 2023 Digital Transformation Index shows China Mobile leading the way with digital services accounting for over 25% of its revenue.

China Mobile has topped Omdia’s 2023 Digital Transformation Index, highlighting the telecommunications company’s successful deployment of high-speed broadband and development of new digital services. SK Telecom and NTT Docomo rank highly as well, reinforcing East Asia’s strong standing in the field of digital transformation.

China Mobile Leads in Digital Transformation

Scoring 27.5 points out of a possible 35, China Mobile’s leadership in the benchmark is attributed to its comprehensive high-speed broadband deployment and the way it has utilized this infrastructure to create innovative new services. In fact, digital transformation services now make up over 25% of the company’s revenue.

East Asian Operators Dominate List

East Asian carriers account for three of the top four spots on the benchmark, with SK Telecom in second place and NTT Docomo in fourth place. As Dario Talmesio, Research Director, Service Provider Strategy & Regulation at Omdia, points out, this demonstrates the advanced nature of service providers in the region, with China Mobile leading the pack as a rapidly-evolving TechCo operator.

e& and Bharti Airtel Make Impressive Gains

UAE-based e& (formerly Etisalat), now ranked equal fifth alongside Telefónica, and Bharti Airtel, ranked seventh, have both shown significant progress in digital transformation. e&’s strong position is attributed to its 2022 strategy of becoming a global technology and investment group, while Bharti Airtel’s rise is a result of its recent 5G launch in India and continued development of digital services.

In conclusion, the latest Omdia rankings emphasize the powerful advancements made by telecommunications operators, especially those in East Asia. China Mobile continues to lead the industry in digital transformation, showcasing the rapid growth and change happening within the sector. Companies such as e& and Bharti Airtel also demonstrate notable progress, signaling a strong future for digital services worldwide.
