The company has announced a next-generation hyperscale data centre campus in Johor, setting ambitious goals for digital infrastructure in Southeast Asia. This project aims to meet the surging demand for high-performance computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and sustainable cloud infrastructure.
Empyrion Digital Secures Key Approvals for Johor Data Centre
A significant milestone was reached as Empyrion Digital attained approvals for both its Electricity Supply Agreement and Data Centre Task Force application. The upcoming Johor Data Centre Campus—referred to as MY1—will be developed on an exclusive 34.9-acre site in Nusajaya, within the SiLC Industrial Cluster. Despite Malaysia’s ongoing national moratorium on data centre projects, MY1 stands out as one of the few ventures granted both site approval and power allocation. The initial power commitment, secured from Tenaga Nasional Berhad, is set at 145MW, with energisation expected by September 2026. The facility’s first phase aims to be ready for service in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Next-Generation Hyperscale Campus to Boost Regional Connectivity
With MY1, Empyrion Digital is creating a 200+MW hyperscale campus that features five 40MW buildings developed in phases. The cutting-edge design incorporates both liquid and air-cooled technologies, targeting industry-leading power usage effectiveness (PUE). Key elements of MY1 include:
- High-performance computing and AI capabilities
- Access to green energy through long-term power purchase agreements
- Robust scalability to support future growth
Furthermore, MY1 is set to play an essential role in strengthening digital connectivity between Johor and Singapore. Partnering with Empyrion’s sister platform SPTel, future customers will enjoy secure, low-latency routes connecting MY1 to the SG1 data centre in Singapore. This connection improves network diversity, resilience, and enables cross-border disaster recovery and hybrid cloud deployments.
Sustainable and Scalable Infrastructure for Asia’s Digital Future
Empyrion Digital’s MY1 campus is a testament to the growing importance of sustainable, scalable data centres across Asia. The campus prioritises green operations by incorporating efficient cooling systems and planning for renewable energy use. According to Mark Fong, CEO of Empyrion Digital, Malaysia is fast becoming a preferred location for hyperscale data centres due to its infrastructure and government support. Once completed, MY1 will join Empyrion’s expanding footprint, which includes projects in Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo, Taipei, and Bangkok—bringing the company’s total Asian IT capacity to over 200MW.
