The AI-powered solution is part of Huawei’s TECH4ALL initiative. In just 90 days, the system has identified 13 individual dolphins using over 2,800 images and videos. Impressively, the AI reached an identification accuracy rate above 90%, while recognition of complex dolphin behavior hit 85%. Data labeling, essential for building accurate models, is now 400% more efficient. These improvements enable conservationists to swiftly gather the data needed for targeted protection measures and to study threats facing the dolphins.

AI Technology Boosts Monitoring and Law Enforcement in Xiamen Bay

To further protect the dolphins, Huawei and its partners implemented a 5G-A network across 330 square kilometers of Xiamen Bay. The system uses radar, visual terminals, satellite data, and AIS vessel tracking to monitor shipping activity in real time. AI-powered alerts instantly detect violations like boundary trespass or speeding ships. As a result, law enforcement response times have improved by 65%, and twelve vessels have already been investigated for risks to the dolphins’ habitat. This tech-enabled approach ensures that conservation zones remain secure.

The project involves collaboration between Huawei, the Third Institute of Oceanography, and China Mobile. Their efforts are especially vital, as Xiamen Bay hosts 51% of China’s dolphin population. Long-term, continuous monitoring is now possible, providing detailed insights into dolphin numbers, distribution, age structure, and breeding habits. These data-driven strategies are critical for addressing threats like noise pollution and habitat loss, supporting the dolphins’ role in both marine ecosystems and the global carbon cycle.
