The Basque Government and IBM have achieved a European breakthrough by inaugurating the continent’s first IBM Quantum System Two in Donostia-San Sebastián. This advanced installation at the IBM-Euskadi Quantum Computational Center positions the region at the forefront of quantum computing innovation.
IBM Quantum System Two Debuts in San Sebastián, Spain
On October 14, 2025, leaders from government, academia, and industry gathered to celebrate the arrival of IBM Quantum System Two at the Ikerbasque Foundation’s campus. Powered by a cutting-edge 156-qubit IBM Quantum Heron processor, the system allows for the execution of utility-scale algorithms surpassing classical computing abilities. This is only the second deployment of such a system outside the US, signifying the Basque Country’s emerging leadership in quantum technologies.
BasQ Initiative and Global Partnerships Drive Innovation
The partnership between IBM and the Basque Government began in 2023 as part of the BasQ – Basque Quantum initiative. This strategic move aims to boost Euskadi’s status as an international hub for quantum research. The collaboration already yields results in materials science and high energy physics, thanks to close cooperation with a global network of scientists. The initiative also supports the Basque Government’s IKUR 2030 vision, targeting breakthroughs in fields like biomedicine, energy, and artificial intelligence.
Boosting Quantum Research and Industry Applications in Europe
With access to this new system, members of the IBM-Euskadi Quantum Computational Center and their partners can now accelerate the development of innovative algorithms and advanced research. The center prioritizes applications in energy, biomedicine, and AI, helping the Basque Country build a robust quantum ecosystem. Furthermore, specialized training programs are in place to grow local talent and promote the Basque region as a leading source of quantum expertise in Europe.
In summary, the launch of IBM Quantum System Two in San Sebastián marks a transformative step for European quantum computing. By fostering scientific collaboration and driving advancements in strategic industrial sectors, the Basque Country is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of this emerging technology.
