India Achieves Major Quantum-Secured Network Breakthrough

India has achieved a significant milestone in secure communications. STL, in partnership with the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), has successfully showcased the nation’s first quantum-secured network using multi-core fibre. This breakthrough positions India at the forefront of next-generation, secure digital infrastructure.

Breakthrough in Quantum Key Distribution on Multi-Core Fibre

For the first time in India, Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) transmission was completed over 100 kilometers on a 4-core Multi-Core Fibre (MCF) network. This state-of-the-art deployment was tested at IIT-Madras under the Department of Telecommunications. The innovative MCF cable allows multiple independent data streams within a single fibre, saving both physical space and infrastructure costs. STL’s MCF cabling, deployed in both aerial and underground networks, meets stringent technology standards and represents a major leap for quantum-secured communications in India.

Integration of QKD and MCF to Support India’s Data Demands

MCF technology delivers a significant advantage for quantum networks. It uniquely enables the separation of quantum and classical signals within a single fibre’s distinct cores. As a result, QKD can operate alongside high-capacity data traffic without signal interference. During the demonstration, quantum signals were transmitted through one core, while the other three handled high-speed user data. This achievement ensures the network can handle India’s growing 5G and 6G data demands without sacrificing security.

STL and C-DOT’s Role in Building Quantum-Secured Networks

The success of this deployment highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in telecom innovation. Leaders from both STL and C-DOT emphasized their commitment to a digitally sovereign and secure India.
