HD Hyundai Pioneers AI Shift in Shipbuilding

In a bold move towards revolutionizing shipbuilding, HD Hyundai is harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology. Executive Vice Chairman Chung Kisun articulated the company’s forward-thinking strategy to drastically reduce human intervention in shipyard operations, with the ultimate goal of enhancing productivity and safety through automation.

HD Hyundai’s Vision for AI-Enhanced Shipbuilding

Chung Kisun’s ambition to build an optimized and automated future shipyard is well underway. HD Hyundai’s Future of Shipyard (FOS) project, initiated in 2021, promises to integrate cutting-edge technologies like AI, robotics, and digital twin technologies into every facet of their operations. This transformation aims to make shipyards safer, more productive, and significantly more efficient.

Strategic Partnerships Boosting Innovation

Underpinning this futuristic vision are strategic collaborations with tech giants such as Palantir and Siemens. HD Hyundai’s engagement with Palantir, in particular, has been highlighted through various promotional activities, including a detailed video released during the World Economic Forum 2025. This video showcases in-depth how Palantir’s big data platform, Foundry, will bolster HD Hyundai’s shipyard digital transformation efforts.

Future Phases of the Shipyard Transformation

The FOS project is structured in three meticulous phases, progressing from the ‘Visible Shipyard’ to the ‘Connected and Predictively Optimized Shipyard,’ and culminating in the ‘Intelligent Autonomous Operating Shipyard’ by 2030. These phases are designed to facilitate a step-by-step integration of sophisticated AI technologies, aiming at a 30% increase in productivity and a proportionate reduction in shipbuilding time.

In summary, HD Hyundai is setting a new standard in the shipbuilding industry by integrating AI and digital technologies to foster safer and more efficient operations. With strategic partnerships and innovative use of technologies, the company is on a clear path to achieving a transformative change in shipyard operations by 2030. As HD Hyundai continues to invest in future-proof technologies and establish global R&D centers, it remains a beacon of innovation in marine mobility technology.
